Mexican Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard ruled out breaking diplomatic relations with Russia
Juan Ramón De la Fuente, representative of Mexico to the UN, indicated that from the beginning and with all clarity, they have supported the independence of Ukraine
Through a virtual press conference, the Secretary of Foreign Affairs of Mexico, Marcelo Ebrard, ruled out breaking diplomatic relations with Russia, after the armed attack carried out against Ukraine.
In this sense, he stated that, "We maintain relations with the Russian Federation, it is one of the things we have to do, maintain dialogue with the different parties that, unfortunately, are participating in this conflict."
He stressed that it is very difficult for Mexico to support a military response, "Our position is essentially to find a political solution," he mentioned.
On the other hand, he stressed that their instruction has always been to reject the use of force and to be in favor of the United Nations resolution.
"The UN is the most complete instrument we have for global governance, with a series of principles and values, there is no other alternative," he said.
Ebrard was accompanied during the online broadcast by the Permanent Representative of Mexico to the United Nations (UN), Juan Ramón de la Fuente, and the Mexican ambassador to Ukraine, Olga García Guillén.
Mexicans in Ukraine
García Guillén reported that 225 people are registered at the Mexican embassy, most of them located in the capital of Ukraine, Kiev.
"Early today morning some distant explosions were heard and later we learned of the attack on strategic facilities, but that they had not attacked the civilian population," said the ambassador.
She added that the four officials who work at the embassy are well and the registered families have not reported incidents to regret.
Additionally, she explained that last week they had carried out the evacuation of Mexican citizens who voluntarily decided to move to the Ukrainian population closest to the border with Romania, and today after the explosions, around 50 more people have requested the transfer to border.
She explained that she will personally transfer the citizens to the border with Romania, where they will be received by the Mexican ambassador in Romania.
The official made available the email address mexicokiev@sre.gob.ve and the telephone number +380 95 281 11 71 to maintain communication.
Mexico at the UN
The representative of Mexico before the UN, explained that since the discussion related to Russia and Ukraine began, since February 17, Mexico has taken a very clear position on two fundamental axes, the constitutional principles of foreign policy and the Charter of the United Nations.
"All the interventions that Mexico has had throughout this conflict are based on these two pillars, which give us clarity and give us certainty," De la Fuente stressed.
He added that they are against the use of force or threat of use of force. "We are in favor of the self-determination of peoples, in favor of the search for peaceful solutions, and we have been promoting the idea that the conflict should be channeled through diplomacy and dialogue," the official commented.
Likewise, he said that during last night's session of the Council, it was when they learned that Russia had launched the "special military operation".
He added that Mexico has clearly supported from the beginning the independence of Ukraine and its territorial integrity based on its internationally recognized borders.
Finally, he added that a draft resolution is awaited, which will be sent to the United States, to be discussed by the Security Council.
