Lourdes Maldonado, the journalist who asked for protection at a press conference, is murdered
Three years ago, through a press conference, the reporter had expressed that she feared for her life, at a press conference in front of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador.
"I come here to ask for support and labor justice, because I even fear for my life"; This is how he expressed it three years ago, in a conference in front of the National Palace.
The events occurred on the afternoon of Sunday the 23rd, when the reporter was on her way home, in the dangerous border area with the United States, where she lost her life after receiving several bullet wounds.
Lourdes Maldonado worked as a reporter on Televisa, but she had been in a lawsuit for years, for an unjustified dismissal, with a local television station, which was owned by the former governor of Baja California Jaime Bonillo, between 2019 – 2021.
Recently, the journalist had mentioned that she had won the dispute, so this meant the commercial embargo of the local television station, in favor of Moreno.
Maldonado belonged to the journalist protection system in the area; however, this does not work fully. The protection offered is not permanent, and the results are terrifying. With this case, three journalists have already been murdered so far this year.
