Benedict XVI apologizes for abuses committed by the clergy
The pope emeritus expressed his pain over sexual violence against children, but denied having covered up for priests who committed these acts during his mandates in the different positions he has held.
A few days ago, Georg Bätzing, president of the German Episcopal Conference, considered that Benedict XVI should apologize for the sexual abuse scandal in the German church, in addition to accepting his responsibility by covering up the different cases.
The report released on the cases of sexual abuse against minors, in the archbishoprics of Munich and Freising, blamed Ratzinger, who was a cardinal at the time, assuring that he was informed of the acts committed by the priest, Peter Hullermann.
Benedict, through his letter, assured that once again, he could only express to all the victims of sexual abuse, his deep shame, pain and sincere request for forgiveness.
He also adds that in all his encounters with victims of sexual abuse by priests, he has perceived in their eyes the consequences of a very great guilt. He also pointed out that "we ourselves drag that guilt when we do not face it with the necessary responsibility, which happens very often."
In another document also made public by the Vatican on Tuesday, four of Ratzinger's advisers say that when he was archbishop, he was not involved in attempts to cover up abuses, assuming the report contains inaccurate information.
In his letter, Benedict XVI thanks Pope Francis for the confidence and prayers that he has expressed personally.
