Mexico has abandoned anti-drug collaboration, according to Washington officials

In an anonymous interview conducted by the Mexican digital magazine Proceso, two officials from the United States Department of Justice denounced that the Mexican government has deactivated collaboration with that country in the fight against drug cartels.

This alleged lack of coordination is being used by the Jalisco New Generation Cartel and the Sinaloa Cartel to expand.

Officials from the United States Department of Justice have declared anonymously that the government of Andrés Manuel López Obrador neglects binational cooperation in the fight against drug trafficking, which allows the two aforementioned Mexican cartels to extend their tentacles of territorial control.

The officials show their surprise because they have the impression that the president is not interested in cooperation with his neighbor to the north. According to his statements, his agents do not have interlocutors for the exchange of intelligence information on the fight against the cartels. The members of the Mexican Navy would be excluded from the strategy to confront the cartels.

Both officials stated that the Donald Trump administration understands that López Obrador has only been in charge for seven months and has been making adjustments to his government plan, as well as some changes such as the establishment of the National Guard and the replacement of the Attorney General's Office. (PGR) by the Attorney General of the Republic (FGR), which causes some obstacles in the normal development of activities.

However, they point out that there is no exchange of intelligence information in bilateral cooperation to combat drug trafficking.

“Our agents do not have counterparts in the states where the drug cartels exercise control of territories. Before, they had agents from the CISEN (Center for Investigation and National Security), federal police officers and delegates from the PGR; Now they don't know who to work with. And I'm not talking about the bureaucratic relationship in Mexico City ; I am talking about the operational personnel, those who are on the battlefields”, stressed one of the interviewees.

This absence of Mexican counterparts for the exchange of intelligence information is felt more by the US government on the southern border of its country. Mexican consulates in California, Texas, New Mexico and Arizona no longer have officially nominated delegates and the FGR has not appointed their replacements.
