2022 Nobel Peace Prize Nominees
The personalities and groups that can win this important award
The deadline to submit nominations for this prestigious annual award has ended on January 31, and some of the nominees for the 2022 Nobel Peace Prize are already known.
According to the statutes to win the Nobel Peace Prize, it must be given to those who have promoted peace processes, who collaborate in the reduction of armies, or those who have worked to promote peace and fraternity relations between countries of the world.
Among this year's nominees, we have recognized personalities such as: Greta Thunberg, Pope Francis, the British ecologist David Attenborough, and even a Latin American scientist María Elena Botazzi, among others.
Similarly, some institutions have been nominated, such as: the WHO for its role in the Coronavirus pandemic, or the Burma Civil Disobedience Movement, along with other groups and institutions.
For the Norwegian committee that deals with these issues, the nominees that we will present below, meet the requirements set out in the statutes.
The main personalities nominated for the Nobel Peace Prizes 2022
Greta Thunberg
For the fourth time since her first appearance at the UN, defending the fight against climate change, the Swedish Greta Thunberg, is again nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize.
Her nomination was apparently proposed by two Norwegian parliamentarians, who have pointed out that the fight to prevent the spread of climate change is also a fight for peace.
Pope Francis
For a new occasion, Pope Francis has been recommended once again to win this award, recognizing his efforts to achieve peace in the world.
The Supreme Pontiff has been taken into account once again, for his efforts to reconcile different positions in various parts of the world, and for his efforts to reverse climate change.
Sir David Attenborough
Climate change and the preservation of the environment are highly recognized in the struggle for world peace, with the British David Attenborough being a very important figure in the awareness of millions of people.
Attenborough is a famous British broadcaster, who has also been a pioneer in ecological documentaries, such as: "Life on Earth", "Planet Earth Mission", among many others.
The 95-year-old environmentalist has been nominated along with the Intergovernmental Science and Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services, or IPBES, which works in conjunction with the UN.
Svetlana Tijanovskaya
Svetlana Tijanóvskaya, is one of the main opponents of the Belarusian regime and President Alexander Lukashenko.
In the year 2020, after her husband was taken to prison, Svetlana Tijanóvskaya launched herself into the presidential race of Belarus, but after the president's victory was consummated; complaints began against the elections and protests in the street.
It would be at that time, when Svetlana Tijanóvskaya would play a leading role calling for peaceful protest, new elections and actions that, despite showing disapproval of the government, would always be carried out within the framework of peace.
These acts and her peaceful struggle have earned her nomination in 2022.
Masih Alinejad
This journalist of Iranian origin residing in the United States has been taken into account to win the Nobel Peace Prize, thanks to her position in defense of women, against the Iranian regime.
Her recognized fight against the Iranian government, to prevent women from continuing to wear the veil, or her position on child marriage in Iran; It has been considered as a struggle for peace, and for the protection of the weakest.
Maria Elena Botazzi
María Elena Botazzi is a Honduran microbiologist, who has managed to win a nomination for the 2022 Nobel Peace Prize, thanks to the development of her Corbevax vaccine against Covid-19.
The particularity of this vaccine is that it is not patented and can be made at low cost, which has been beneficial in creating immunity in the poorest.
The news of her nomination has brought pride and joy to this Central American country, considering it an important recognition of a lifetime of research.
Organizations nominated for the 2022 Nobel Peace Prize
Sometimes, the Nobel Peace Prize is awarded to institutions that have helped develop peace, supported conflict resolution, or for outstanding performances at times in history; such as the UN, the International Red Cross, the World Food Program, among others.
This year the main organizations nominated are the following.
World Health Organization
The Covid-19 pandemic, which has affected millions of people, has made the WHO recognized for winning the 2022 Nobel Peace Prize, after its efforts to solve this situation and promote the COVAX vaccination program.
Burma Civil Disobedience Movement
This movement has emerged after a de facto government was established in Burma, after the 2021 coup.
This coup d'état was carried out when the military did not recognize the electoral results, which gave Aung San Suu Kyi as the winner, who was also the winner of the Nobel Peace Prize in 1991.
The Burma Civil Disobedience Movement has sought to restore constitutional order and democracy, and it is this noble struggle that has earned it this nomination.
Arctic Council
This council that is in charge of everything related to the Arctic, has been nominated thanks to its work in the conservation and maintenance of world peace, from this important point on the planet.
The Arctic Council is responsible for the security of this area, bringing together countries that are currently in a difficult situation, due to the tense situation between Russia and Ukraine.
The Arctic Council has become an important place for talks between various NATO countries and Russia, working to reach agreements; sparking their nomination for the 2022 Nobel Peace Prize.
WikiLeaks
Eleven years after their first nomination, Wikileaks and Julian Assange have been nominated again for the 2022 Nobel Peace Prize.
Those in charge of executing their nomination have indicated that they do so in recognition of their work for peace, and the great sacrifices that the founder of Wikileaks has made, to show a fragment of the world truth, which would remain hidden were it not for his contributions.
Similarly, it is recognized that the publication of secret documents by Assange in Wikileaks has helped to find peace, bring those responsible to justice and learn about human rights violations, mainly in the war that the United States led to Middle East.
These are some of the nominees for the 2022 Nobel Peace Prize, but not the only ones, as the entire list of nominees remains secret for 50 years, according to the rules of the Norwegian Nobel Committee.
