Sergio Mattarella is re-elected as President of Italy
Sergio Mattarella, current president of Italy, will have seven more years of government.
After seven consecutive votes, the Italian parliament elected Sergio Mattarella to serve as president of this nation for seven more years.
Mattarella, who is 80 years old, managed to get 505 votes from the voters who have the right to participate in the voting in this country, which determined his absolute majority with 1,009 votes.
The nation's Prime Minister, Mario Draghi, expressed that "Sergio Mattarella's re-election to the presidency of the Republic of Italy is splendid news for Italians. I thank the president for his decision to accept Parliament's will to re-elect him for a second term ".
His current mandate will end on February 3, and although he had stated that he did not want to continue in power, he gave in before the proposals of the other parties that consider him the best option for Italy.
With this re-election and with a total of 759 parliamentarians who favored Mattarella, he became the second president with the most votes in the history of Italy, after Sandro Pertini, who received the support of 832 voters in 1978.
The Minister of Regional Affairs and member of Forza Italia, Mariastella Gelmini, praised Mattarella's decision and considered that his willingness to accept a second term is proof that he is a man with a sense of responsibility and "attachment to the country and its institutions.", he expressed.
In the year 2021, the current ruler expressed several times that he had no interest in remaining in the presidency for seven more years. But as we mentioned before, due to the acceptance of his compatriots, he accepted the challenge of continuing in the government chair.
Mattarella will become in the next few days the second head of state in Italy to repeat his mandate. The first was Giorgio Napolitano, who did it in 2013, but resigned in 2015 and at that time Mattarella took over.
