The Council of the European Union decided to extend the sanctions imposed on Nicaragua

The European Union has I decide that it will extend the sanctions imposed on Nicaragua until October 15, 2022, due to the political and social deterioration.

Currently, 14 sanctions against Nicaraguan politicians and officials are active, including Vice President and First Lady Rosario Murillo, all sanctions were implemented so as not to harm the population or the country's economy.

Prohibitions on Nicaraguans sanctioned by the European Union

• Each sanctioned person on the list is subject to an assets freeze, and it is prohibited for European Union Companies to put funds for their use.

• They cannot travel or transit through the European Union.

The sanctions imposed on Nicaragua were applied for the first time

The sanctions imposed by the European Union were applied for the first time in October 2019, to combat the political and social deterioration faced by Nicaragua. The sanctions were directed at individuals and entities that had violated human rights and the democratic opposition in that country.

On June 10, 2021, the European Union called for inclusive and democratic dialogue to Nicaragua for a way out of the political, social and economic crisis.

Nicaragua has intensified the repression, outlawing opposition parties and civil society organizations.

The president of Nicaragua, Daniel Ortega, has announced on different occasions that all the sanctions imposed by the European Union are attacks on the sovereignty of his country and negatively influence the internal affairs of Nicaragua.
