Russia threatens nuclear weapons if Finland and Sweden join NATO

Medvedev questioned the use of the Ukraine invasion as an excuse for more countries to join NATO.

Dmitri Medvedev, vice president of the Russian Security Council, assured that if Finland and Sweden join the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), Moscow will carry out a nuclear deployment.

The official indicated that the anti-aircraft defense will have to be reinforced, as well as the groups on the ground. There will also be a deployment of naval forces in the waters of the Gulf of Finland, which is why, according to him, "it will not be possible to speak of the Baltic without nuclear weapons."

According to Medvedev, whether a country or two enter or leave the OTA "makes a big difference", however, if Finland and Sweden join, the border between Russia and NATO will double in length, so it is necessary to "strengthen the zone".

Similarly, he questioned whether the "special military operation" carried out by Moscow in Ukraine is blamed as an excuse for the candidates to join NATO to try to join the Alliance.

The former Russian president added that if Finland and Sweden join NATO they will raise taxes and prices, which no "sensible" person would want for their country. At the same time, he emphasized that no citizen will accept that there are weapons and missiles near their territory.

To conclude, he stated that they trust their northern neighbors to make the best decision regarding their incorporation into NATO, "and if not, as they say, they have asked for it themselves".
