African-American woman could reach the Supreme Court of the United States
A black judge could be the replacement for Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer, who announced his retirement.
Justice Stephen Breyer offers Biden the opportunity to appoint a black woman to the highest court in the country, as he promised on the campaign trail.
Biden reported on Thursday that before the end of February, the candidacy of this woman to occupy the position of the United States high judiciary will be known. This was notified after the announcement of Justice Breyer's withdrawal.
In statements offered from the White House, the president informed that this person must be of exceptional qualifications, with experience, integrity and character. She will be the first black woman to be nominated to the US Supreme Court.
Likewise, she assured that it is time, and affirmed that she will be honored, just as she promised in her electoral campaign.
The President offered gratitude for Judge Breyer's service, exclaiming that he has an exceptional career of public service and is deeply committed to making the laws of the land work in the best way for the citizens.
The judge said on the spot that when hearing multitudes of cases in court, the impression one gets is that it is a complicated country, in which 300 million people have different religions, races and different points of view.
He assured that it is a miracle to be there and see that all the people have different ideas. However, they are people who have made the decision to help resolve their inequalities within the framework of the law.
Judge's Retreat
Stephen Breyer, 84, is retiring from office. This information was notified on Wednesday by different sources.
It came at an important moment for the Democratic Party, which was battered by the failure of President Biden's legislative agenda in Congress last week.
Breyer has been an important person with a pragmatic force on the Supreme Court, which lost liberal clout in its later years following the appointment of conservative justices who were appointed by former President Trump.
The Democratic Party hopes that the replacement of the judge will be for a young liberal magistrate who will remain on the court for a long time, since he has a majority in the Senate that they could lose in the elections that will take place next November.
Fulfilling President Biden's promise of appointing the first black female Supreme Court justice, Democrats would be expected to encourage black voters, who would be a primary supporter of the campaign.
Candidates
Some candidates for the position are: Sherrilyn Ifill, civil rights attorney; Michelle Childs, federal judge nominated by Joe Biden to the federal appeals court; Leondra Kruger, a California Supreme Court Justice and Ketanji Brown Jackson, a federal judge.
Representative James Clyburn of South Carolina assures that his favorite is Michelle Childs, since his support was important in the victory of Joe Biden's candidacy in the primaries held in 2020.
The founder of the national organization that invites non-white women to vote, Ella el Pueblo, Aimee Allison, assured that this is a great opportunity for them.
He insisted that the appointment of a black woman would be a great help at this time, due to the political and legislative problems witnessed recently.
