15 years in prison and had 4 children without having conjugal visits or leaving prison
Being detained was not an obstacle to becoming a father
Rafat Al-Qarawi was arrested in Israel in 2006 for his involvement in terrorist activities in the Second Intifada. For this, he received a sentence of 15 years in prison, which he served in March 2021 and was released.
Al-Qawari had four biological children with his wife, without having intimidated. Unable to receive conjugal visits, he managed to smuggle his own semen while in jail.
At the end of 2021, he explained that, when he took out the semen, he put it in a container, and thus gave it to his relatives, since he had the possibility of giving them a suitcase with five things.
Inside the suitcase, the sealed container was a bag with sperm. The former detainee says that this is like going to the supermarket, since he has the possibility of deciding what to give to the family. It can be whatever the person wants, juices, cookies, sweets, etc.
In addition, he explained that the bag was camouflaged so that the guards could not notice it. At the time of the visit, only the prisoner was the one who could touch the suitcase with what was given to him and then his relative or his wife received it.
Whoever received the suitcase, whether it was his mother or his wife, immediately went with the bag to the Razan Medical Center, in charge of insemination. The bag included the detainee's name.
In this process, the woman underwent superovulation, egg retrieval and fertilization of her husband's semen for days beforehand. After the procedure, the embryo was introduced into the uterus to complete the pregnancy process.
More than 100 children were conceived in this way, according to data collected by the Paletinian Media Watch, which was in charge of receiving testimonies from inmates of the past.
