Spain calls on Mexico not to pause bilateral dialogue
The Spanish Foreign Minister, José Manuel Albares, called on the Mexican government to speed up binational relations. These statements were made after the Mexican president, Andrés Manuel López, said days ago that it was better to pause relations between the two countries "to respect us and not see us as a land of conquest."
"Right now, relations are not asking for a pause, they are asking that governments to accompany what has been an acceleration year after year for at least 15 or 20 years," Albares said.
The minister is committed to strengthening and lowering tensions between the two countries and assures that Amlo's accusations are "unjustified".
López Obrador also emphasized that "we do not want them to rob us, just as the Spaniards do not want any country to rob them", statements that surprised the Spanish government, due to the harshness of its criticism and threats of a distance between the two countries.
It is important to note that this is not the first time that the Mexican president has questioned the Spanish government or some companies.
Various sectors have pointed out that the threat of a bilateral conflict is to divert attention, since a recall referendum on López Obrador will be held in the coming months.
In 2019, Amlo sent a letter of complaint to the King of Spain to apologize for the excesses committed against the Aztec people during the colonial era.
