Violence in Colombia increases a few weeks before the presidential elections

A car bomb destroyed the Mayor's Office of the Argelia municipality, in the department of Cauca (southwest of the country) in Colombia. According to the report of the authorities, at least one person was injured.

2022 could be the most dangerous year since the peace agreement began in 2016.

The event also affected the buildings near the Mayor's Office, as well as the municipality's House of Culture, however, the strongest damage was suffered by the city hall, which was seriously affected.

The mayor of Algeria, Jhonnatan Patiño reported that the security guard was injured, although he did not report that there were more affected by the explosion. In the same way, he emphasized that from a distance the damage caused to the structure of the Mayor's Office can be seen.

repudiation of the authorities

The president of Colombia, Iván Duque, assured that they will find those responsible for the attack, at the same time that he called it an act of “terrorism in Algeria”.

While Defense Minister Diego Molano said that, in the face of the aggression with the car bomb, an extraordinary security council will be held to find the whereabouts of the authors of the explosion. "We will not rest until we put behind bars those responsible for frightening Algerians."

violence unleashed

Until now no armed group has claimed responsibility, however, it is known to the authorities and neighbors, that the Carlos Patiño front, of the dissidence of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC), operates in the area.

During the weekend there was also the murder of a social leader in Cauca and the massacre in which a group of armed men killed three brothers.

Since the beginning of 2022, there have been at least 30 massacres and approximately 50 social leaders have been killed, which could be the most violent since the peace process began 5 years ago.

On May 29, the presidential elections will be held in Colombia, amid attacks and terror in the population, which has also been affected by armed groups.
