Bridge collapse in Pittsburgh leaves 10 injured

10 people were injured after the collapse of the Pittsburgh Bridge, located in Pennsylvania, United States.

Four vehicles fell when the bridge collapsed.

The event occurred in the morning hours of this Thursday, just before President Joe Biden visited the town to learn about and offer solutions precisely on its infrastructure.

Darryl Jones, Pittsburgh Fire Chief, told the media that three of the injured people were taken to the nearest hospital and fortunately none had serious injuries. The other seven did not suffer major damage, so they were taken to their homes.

The Pittsburg OPS (Office of Public Safety), located to the northwest, 395 kilometers from Washington, reported on this landslide that connects Forbes Avenue with Frick Park and suggested that the public avoid approaching the area, due to the condition of the same.

Biden assured that he will improve all the bridges in the town

Biden's visit continued, and in the afternoon he spoke with the city's mayor, Ed Gainey, who spoke to him about the need for repairs to Pennsylvania's bridges.

Biden expressed his desire to prioritize the implementation of his infrastructure plan, which has already been approved by Congress, and among his proposals is the construction and improvement of bridges, highways, airports, ports, among others.

During the visit, the president met with local officials and also with the emergency personnel who were near the Fern Hollow viaduct, the name of the collapsed bridge, to learn about the situation of the infrastructure in the region.

Biden said that he has been visiting Pittsburgh for a long time, and one of its characteristics is the large number of bridges it has, "I am going to fix them all," he said.

Likewise, the president assured that there are 43,000 bridges throughout the country and will send the necessary resources to each place to fix them in their entirety.

The bridge had been built 52 years ago

The bridge that collapsed was nothing more and nothing less than 52 years old, in addition, it was completely covered in snow, which was a trigger for its structure to perish.

The government budget for the improvement of infrastructure

As announced by official entities that 1.2 billion dollars is the approximate amount approved by the Biden presidency for the Infrastructure Law, signed last December.

The US ruler considers it essential to start these works, since once completed, they will be able to be at the level of other large countries.

Although the president and his fellow Democrats celebrated this parliamentary achievement, others considered that the billion dollars is nothing, in terms of what is really needed to correct the years of neglect by the White House to renew the infrastructure of the country.

Images from various media outlets show four vehicles that fell into the gap opened by the displacement of the bridge, and another car hanging on an edge.

It was also learned that one of the Pittsburgh Port Authority buses, measuring 18 meters wide, was trapped in the middle of a slab that fell into a ditch during the collapse.

The driver and the two passengers who were inside the unit managed to get out of the incident unharmed.
