Samsung promises 4 years of updates for its devices
One of the main disadvantages that Android has with respect to Apple is the update that is given to the devices. Usually, an Apple device receives updates for several years, which means that mobile phones do not become obsolete so quickly.
But in Android this does not happen in this way and it is that mobile phones stop receiving updates very quickly.
Even entry-level phones (the cheapest) may never receive updates. The mid-range can receive one and depending on the manufacturer maybe two.
When we talk about high-end mobiles, we have that they can receive up to three software updates. However, from now on, Samsung phones will start receiving updates for up to 4 years. Obviously, we are talking about the brand's high-end equipment, that is, the equipments that conforms the Samsung S series.
Why do Android devices stop receiving updates?
To be fair, the truth is that supporting Android devices can be a daunting task. Each manufacturer usually has at least 3 types of equipment that are usually low, medium and high range. So we have to release at least 3 devices every year.
Chinese brands like Xiaomi usually launch a large number of equipments each year. It is even normal in the lower ranges that they have 3 or 4 variants of the same device. When you have so many devices, it can become quite difficult to keep them all up to date.
Additionally, we have limitations when it comes to hardware, these low-end devices usually have quite tight features, which makes it impossible to update them for a long time.
What will it mean that Samsung offers 4 years of updates?
Undoubtedly, this is a great advance for all users of this brand, but only for that, but it can become a precedent and perhaps other companies are interested in offering more extended support, at least in the high-end equipment.
One of the manufacturers that has it easier is probably Google, but the company only offers up to 3 years of updating on their Pixel devices. Probably Android will not reach the level of updates that Apple has, however, this is a very positive development.
