Tragedy in Colombia leaves 14 dead

A part of the mountain fell off and buried several houses in the city of Pereira

The landslide caused 14 deaths.

On Tuesday, heavy rains caused a landslide, killing 14 people in western Colombia. So far, the 35 people who were injured have been taken to medical centers.

In the popular sector, the La Esneda neighborhood, in Pereira, in the early hours of the morning, the landslide occurred. In this area the houses are made of wood.

Carlos Maya, the mayor of the Municipality, informed the press that the last time a landslide was recorded in the city was in 1977. In addition, he assured that the risk of landslide remains in the area, for which he asked citizens to withdraw from the place to prevent the number of victims from increasing.

In a statement, the mayor said that the strong cause of this emergency was the breakage of the ditch channel, which caused the storage and abundant water towards the slope.

The specialized teams were in charge of seeing the results, while evaluating the risks and damages in more than 50 homes.

Ivan Duque, the Colombian president, conveyed his sincere condolences to the relatives of the deceased. In a public tweet that accompanies the Risaraldense people in this difficult time.

The president requested a search and rescue job from the team of the National Unit for Disaster Risk Management. In addition to asking them to be ready for an emergency intervention.
