Afghan female presenters must cover their faces to appear on television
Taliban government action

A measure that was announced by the Taliban Government, and that is part of the repressions that are dictated against women.

This restriction estimates that all women who play the role of journalists, and appear on television, must cover their faces.

The measure was announced by the spokesman for the Ministry for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice, Mohamad Sadeq Akif Mohajir, on the Afghan TV channel. In the statement, he explained that "the decision is final", and at the same time admitted that there will be no room to debate it.

Likewise, he pointed out that all people who live under a government system must respect the laws, so there will be no going back with the measure taken.

Once the measure was issued, some television presenters from the TOLOnews and Shamshad TV channels went on the air without covering their faces, as they allege that the next measure by the Taliban government will be to demand that they leave their jobs; so they went against that law.

The Taliban and restrictions on women

Since returning to power, the Taliban have maintained a series of restrictions on Afghan women, and society in general; it seems that the goal is to limit all their rights.

During the month of May, the measure of the supreme leader of the Taliban, Hibatullah Akhundzada, was that women should fully cover their bodies and faces in public.

He also urged that these women should stay at home, which triggered strong protests in the streets of the capital. Despite this, restrictions against women's freedom are gradually being imposed.
