Massacre in Suarez against Karina García and 5 social leaders in Colombia
In a series of violent events, the murder of Karina García Sierra, who was a candidate for mayor, was recorded. In the event, the mother of the mayoral candidate, a candidate for the council and three community leaders who accompanied the delegation were murdered.
In the last hours, it was known that the candidate had received death threats against her, in addition, she was the victim of a rather aggressive electoral campaign. So far, Colonel Fabio Rojas stated that FARC dissidents attacked the truck in which the candidate was traveling, subsequently burning the truck.
The candidate had stated that other candidates were raising false testimonies about her candidacy and that her work team was constantly threatened by strangers. Even in a statement from Karina García, she states that she is concerned about her life and that if she continues like this, they could threaten her life, which ended up being real.
Karina García, had asked Mayor Hernando Ramírez for support and denounced him for not giving her sufficient support for her political work.
The incinerated vehicle was part of the National Protection Unit and provided security support for the candidate to move around the region. However, it was not enough to stop this attack.
The body of Blanca Otilia Sierra was found hours later, as well as that of the other four people who accompanied her. The other victims of the incident are Aidé Trochez, representative of the victims' table, Lavedis Ramos, follower of the campaign from the village of El Manzano, Yeison Obando, candidate for the Council and Héctor González, president of the Community Action Board of the Las Brisas neighborhood in Suárez.
