The United States considers the conflict in Ukraine avoidable and urges Russia to back down
Mark Milley announced his concern about the military movement of 100,000 Russian soldiers on the Ukrainian border.
Due to the tension with Russia that has been increasing due to the mobilization of the military on the border with Ukraine, the United States urged Russia to take a step back, insisting that the conflict can be avoided.
General Mark Milley, head of the Joint Chiefs of Staff of the United States, through a press conference at the Pentagon, called on Russia to withdraw and seek a diplomatic solution to the conflict.
He added that for everyone to emerge victorious from the conflict there must be a dialogue, since for the general, armed confrontation must always be the last resort.
Currently, there are 100,000 Russian soldiers on the Ukrainian border, including ground infantry, air force, naval brigades, special operations forces and IT forces.
Milley said that such a large concentration of Russian soldiers had never been seen since the time of the Cold War.
He added that this conflict has an escalation and potential greater than any event we have experienced in modern times. “You would have to go back to the Cold War era to see something of this magnitude.”
Lloyd Austin, Secretary of Defense of the Pentagon, declared at the same press conference that this conflict with Russia can be avoided, but at the same time warned that the United States will not stop supporting its allies in NATO in the event of an invasion of territory ukrainian.
He added that currently the United States offered Russia a diplomatic path to get out of the current crisis and move towards better security.
Austin said that so far the United States has not mobilized soldiers in response to the agglomeration of Russian military forces on the border with Ukraine, however, they have placed 8,500 soldiers on US territory on alert for a possible Russian invasion.
In his statement, he explained that in mobilizing troops, the United States' goal will always be to support NATO and its allies. Austin stressed that the US armed forces are raising their levels of preparation for a possible Russian attack.
He also added that at the moment there is a commission of military advisers and instructors from the United States and NATO in Ukraine.
In his conclusion, he stressed that the United States does not have assault weapons systems, permanent forces or military bases in Ukraine.
