A Razer laptop with Linux thanks to Lambda – Technology – WebMediums
A fairly powerful computer that includes a Linux operating system.

Razer is a company that is responsible for manufacturing high-performance laptops. Historically, it hasn't gotten along very well with Linux and we can see this in the fact that there is no official support for its hardware. Fortunately, there are some that are maintained by the community.

This is something that makes it difficult to get Linux installed on these computers. Of course, this does not mean that it is impossible and we can see this in a project carried out by "Lambda", a really interesting technology company.

This has managed to install a fully functional Ubuntu 20.04 LTS operating system on an Advanced Blade 15. In this way, we have the company's first laptop to run a fully functional version of Linux.

What characteristics does this equipment have?

Main features of the Lambda and Razer Tensorbook.

The laptop that Lambda has made has been baptized with Tensorbook and this has been a laptop that has had a rebranding process and which, apparently, Reason gave its approval.

The team's official name is Razer x Lambda Tensorbook and it's primarily designed for hard work. Although thanks to its characteristics, it could also be used to play. Of course, in this section, despite the fact that there are many interesting games on Linux, you could not get the most out of its specifications.

Among the main technical characteristics included in the Tensorbook we have the following:

  • Intel Core i7-11800H 8-Core 2.3GHz Processor.

  • 64GB DDR4 RAM.

  • 1TB NVMe SSD.

  • NVIDIA RTC 3080 Max-Q graphics with 16 GB VRAM.

  • 15.6-inch screen with 1440p resolution and a refresh rate of 165 Hz.

  • 8Wr battery with a range of up to 9 hours.

As you can see, this is a fairly powerful laptop that, together with Ubuntu 20.04 LTS, has excellent performance. Of course, as we mentioned, this is a team that is mainly oriented to the professional sector.

We can see this in its cost, since as you can imagine, it is a somewhat expensive equipment. However, if you're looking for "seamless" usability, this Tensorbook is all you need.

models and prices

It is a team that is not for everyone.

This equipment will be available in three different models, the Base, Standard and Enterprise. These three teams do not have differences at the hardware level, that is, their specifications are exactly the same.

However, the difference lies in the warranty and support that the company offers. The Base model has a one-year warranty and premium support from Lambda and is priced at $3,499.

The Standard model has a two-year warranty and support for a price of $4,099. For its part, the Enterprise version has a 3-year warranty and support and costs $4,999.

Dual boot with Windows

It is possible to have dual boot between Windows and Linux.

These computers have the ability to dual boot Windows. However, it is not free, since if you want to do it in the Base and Standard versions, you will have to shell out an additional 500 dollars.

As for the Enterprise version, it already has dual boot included in the price. So, this is something you should keep in mind when choosing between the different models.

Is it worth buying this equipment?

The fact that it is worth it or not will depend mainly on the user's need. For example, if you work professionally and use Linux, this can be a very good option.

If you want to buy it to play or for personal use, it is important to take into account the cost and the fact that you will have to pay extra to use Windows (system where the largest number of games are). However, for the cost of this team, there are some options that may be more interesting to play.

In general, this is a very good team that will give you great performance. However, this will depend mainly on the user, for many, a computer of this type is not what they need.
