Three endemic Bahamian bird species presumed extinct in the wake of Hurricane Dorian
Bahamas is an island that is home to several species of fauna and flora. Some animals such as birds can have the facility to travel far from danger, however, there are three endemic birds that are not large enough to leave the island and could have been extinct due to Hurricane Dorian.
Nuthatch or nuthatch from the Bahamas, is the name of an endangered specimen that had been sighted in 2018 and considered in imminent danger of disappearance due to only having a couple of specimens. The Bahama Parrot and the Bahama Oriole are the other threatened species in the wake of the hurricane.
However, the massive destruction is due to anthropic factors. Humans have destroyed their space and captured some of their specimens. Now, the hurricane has destroyed an important part of their habitat, especially on Grand Bahama Island, where only about 50 pairs of Oriol birds remained.
The massive damage is from strong winds and rains. A bird of these sizes is not naturally designed to withstand the force of a Category 5 hurricane and due to its size it is likely that it would not consider traveling to another area trying to protect itself.
Now, the work is focused on recovering the island from its total destruction. 70 thousand people were seriously affected, of this figure, 13 thousand people lost absolutely everything, according to the International Red Cross.
