Caramelized onions can be prepared in different ways. Therefore, today I present a way to make them healthy and without extra sugar.
Caramelized onions are usually one of the most used companions in the kitchen and, fortunately for all, no specialized techniques need to be applied for their preparation. On the contrary, it only requires patience for a delicious finish.
Let's get to work, so that in a short time, you can create this natural delight.
Ingredients
This recipe requires no more than 3 basic elements. These are usually in our pantry. Among them:
Salt.
Onion.
Extra virgin olive oil.
Step by step of caramelized onions
We begin by cutting the onion into julienne strips, ensuring that the strips are as similar as possible in size.
Also cut them in half so they are not too long.
When they are ready sprinkle a little salt. To calculate a good portion, you should consider that when cooking the onion, it usually lets water out, getting shrinked as a result. So you should consider doubling the onion slices per serving.
Add a little oil in a pan until it covers the bottom and turn the heat to medium-high.
When it is very hot, add the onion strips creating a layer in which they do not overlap each other.
We stir a little to separate and give them place. Wait for it to warm up again. Try to use a pan with a good flat base, so that the onions can be in a better position.
Then, take the flame to a low level and that's how we'll cook. The process takes about 1 hour or a little longer depending on the onion and the pan.
Do not forget to stir occasionally with a spatula so that the strips do not stick and cooking is even. In general, at the last minutes is when it deserves the most attention.
Lastly, the strips begin to take on a golden or caramel color. Its texture will also change and everything will be in a honeyed texture. And that's it!
Keep in mind that despite being a very simple procedure, the onion should not stick so as not to make the preparation bitter. As you will see, you must have a lot of patience so that they cook properly without sticking.
If for some reason the preparation dries out, you can add water to slow down the cooking process a bit. When you're done you can serve as a side dish.
