Cuban official media highlights the benefits of "Cockroach Milk" in the midst of the shortage that the island is going through
Research carried out at the Institute of Biology of India would indicate that "Cockroach Milk" would be more nutritious than cow's milk
On March 28, the official Cuban media outlet Radio Guamá published on its website and social networks the benefits of "Cockroach Milk", a publication that did not go down very well with the population, since the island is experiencing a dairy shortage.
Said shortage is attributed, according to the Díaz-Canel government, to the economic blockade applied by the United States for 60 years.
The article published on the internet highlighted said milk as “The new nutritious drink”. Although on their social networks they made the clarification that the article was a "scientific curiosity" published by Mercatrace and that the experiment is not related to their reality, it was taken as a mockery for those who reside in Cuba.
It should be noted that according to the CubaNoticias360 portal, the price of a kilo of powdered milk found on the island ranges between one thousand and two thousand Cuban pesos (between 41 and almost 50 US dollars), while a liter of milk is 200 pesos ($8.33).
What is Cockroach Milk?
Although the note was removed from their web portal, it specified that "Cockroach milk" is a crystallized milk-like secretion produced by the Diploptera punctata cockroach or Pacific beetle, a viviparous species found in Hawaii and which feeds their young with this liquid.
In addition, it detailed the composition of the food, pointing out that it has a high nutritional value, rich in proteins, carbohydrates and fats. Similarly, "milk" is yellow in color, thick, and has a high rancid taste.
This information was published without mentioning any official source, however, in 2016 scientists from the Institute of Stem Cell Biology and Regenerative Medicine in India, came to point out that such milk would be even "more nutritious than cow milk".
Sanchari Banerjee, a member of the scientists who participated in the investigation, indicated at the time that the drink contains sugars, fats and proteins that provide three times more energy than cow's milk.
The study also highlighted the unfeasibility of selling "Cockroach Milk", since it would be necessary to kill more than a thousand of these species to obtain just 100 grams of milk.
However, in the article published by the Cuban media sympathetic to the government, they highlighted that Colombia markets and distributes said milk and that its sale in Europe will probably be authorized in the future.
misrepresentation of information
This April 1, a new note was published on the Radio Guamá website where they catalog the review that their old publication had as a "discredit and demonization created by disinformation networks to make fun of Cuban society, and of course, of their institutions”.
In the same way, they allude to other media outlets that in the past published information about "Cockroach Milk" in an attempt to maintain their credibility.
