The flag of Ukraine was adopted after the proclamation of its independence from the Soviet Union in 1992.

It has great meaning for all Ukrainian citizens and a great story behind it. In addition, it has a very unusual color combination.

Since very recently, the Ukrainian flag has been flown by many people and institutions. This has been a show of solidarity in the face of recent acts of violence by the Russian military in that country.

Meaning of the colors

The official website of the nation details that blue is for the color of the sky and yellow for its extensive wheat fields in the country.

Through these colors, citizens show that Ukraine is a country with freedom-loving citizens, and they are independent, vibrant and courageous people.

According to the Observatory of Economic Complexity (OEC), in Ukraine, wheat is highly relevant, since it exports, together with Russia, a quarter of the wheat around the world.

Demosthenes, a Greek orator, described the land that is now Ukraine as 'the granary of Greece', in the 4th century BC

Origin of the flag

According to specialists quoted by the National Technical University of Ukraine, in ancient pagan times, the combination of blue and yellow colors were used. Likewise, the Orthodox Church decided to adopt the shades that represent fire and water, the symbols of holiness.

According to Jan Dlugosz, Polish historian, the flag of the land of Lviv, during the 1410 Battle of Grunwald, featured a yellow lion climbing a rock over a field of azure.

The flags of the Ukrainian Cossack companies and regiments used to be blue, with details such as crosses, stars or weapons, in yellow, since the 18th century. During the spring of nations, in 1848, the blue and yellow flag was adopted for Lemberg, capital of Lodomeria and the Kingdom of Galicia.

In this way, on March 22, 1918, the Central Rada of Kiev decided to officially adopt the flag of the People's Republic of Ukraine, with blue and yellow colors. However, later the colors were reversed.

In 1922, the country, upon joining the Soviet Union, this banner was banned as it looked like anti-Soviet propaganda. After the dissolution of the US, Ukraine again proclaimed the yellow and blue flag as its own, in 1992. And so it maintains it as the essence of its identity.

This symbol is less well known than the flag. However, it also has certain peculiarities.

The most striking, at first glance, is the trident called Tryzub and it occupies most of the shield. This was first used by the Kievan Rus' prince Sviatoslav I in the 10th century.

Then, in 1918, the nascent Ukrainian People's Republic decided to adopt it. After four years, it was no longer used at the official level. Thus, it became a symbol for anti-communist and independence groups. In 1992, it was accepted as the country's emblem, along with the flag.

the name of the country

The name of this country is a composition of two words in the ancient Ukrainian language.

A very famous theory explains that, 'y' translates as 'native' or 'our', and 'країна' means 'country'. In this way, 'Ukraine' could mean: 'our country', 'in the country' or 'native country'.

The Dictionary of the Spanish Language of the Royal Spanish Academy indicates that the term 'Ukrainian' is an adjective.

This would define a natural person of the country. In addition, it is used to refer to everything that is related to the country and its population.
