Decoration of small rooms

Regardless of the dimensions or the style of your small room, each aspect placed will have a positive or negative influence. This is what many have not understood, being the beginning of the errors that you will see below.

1. Element overload

To begin with, you must be clear that the same number of elements that you could have in a large room will not fit in the same way in a small one, that is, of course, if you manage to get everyone to enter.

The overload of elements also reduces the room, even generating an opaque and saturated environment, which affects not only your decoration, but also your coexistence.

To solve it, you must take into account each aspect that you will implement, where you will place it, and even the function that it has in the environment.

This last aspect will lead you to meditate on the minimalist trend. The basis of this style focuses on using only what is necessary, something that is vital for small rooms.

But, if you are not very fond of decorations in this style, keep in mind its principle, since, even if you decide on a modern, chic, industrial or vintage look; to mention a few, you must integrate the most basic elements.

In this sense, think about what cannot be missing in your living room, and from that list the essential elements will come out.

On the other hand, a very useful tip to avoid this mistake is to resort to multifunction furniture or accessories, that is, that are practical for different purposes, so you will not need extra elements.

2. Use dark or vibrant colors on walls

The error is not precisely in the color, but in how they are applied in a small environment.

The dark colors are imposing and attractive, while the vibrant ones are striking and captivating, however, their intensity affects small environments. Therefore, it is not recommended to place them as a base for all your walls.

Although small spaces have a natural tendency to be dark, we must strategically play against this, mainly avoiding black, dark gray, deep brown and many others with this intensity.

Also, the vibrant tones in orange, yellow, furcia, violet and green, will act saturating the environment, making it very energetic and uncomfortable.

To remedy this, in your decoration design for small rooms, opt for light colors, specifically in the coverage of the walls. Tones, pale pink, light gray, pastels, sand, bone and the infallible white, should be among your options.

This does not mean that you will erase those strong tones that you love from your decoration, but you should implement them on a smaller scale. Whether it's on cushions, an ornament or even a small piece of furniture it will look sensational without being overwhelming.

3. Designs on walls

A very implemented decoration trend, because it is practical and easy, are the designs on the walls. Whether in its textured version, artistic painting or a simple wallpaper covering all the walls, it can ruin your small room decoration.

The reason is based on error number 1 on the list, since having so many elements in its design, it can saturate the environment, no matter how few elements the room has.

But it is also not a problem that has no solution, to begin with, if you still want to implement some design on the walls, stay away from the following:

  • Very large figure patterns.

  • Use lots of dark and vibrant colors.

  • Implement it on all walls.

  • Use different patterns in the room.

The idea is that the design you implement matches the dimensions of the environment. Therefore, they should be presented simple and with patterns of small or medium sizes.

If it's a textured wall or art design, make sure it stands out on one wall, preferably in the entertainment area or the one that faces the couch.

In the case of wallpaper or a pattern painting design, you can place it in the above areas, and in small sections, such as a narrow wall or in the form of large paintings.

4. Closed spaces

Avoid a closed environment when decorating small rooms.

A mistake that is made in the decoration of small spaces, and sometimes as a habit, is to keep the environment closed, that is, without windows or light sources.

Having a small room is a problem, but if you add confinement to that, no matter how many light colors you apply, the place will become tired and dull.

The idea is to generate amplitude, and if you have a window, don't hide it with thick curtains, make the most of it, since sunlight offers lighting and warmth that will open up the environment.

If you have the possibility to remodel your small room, I suggest glass windows, panels, glass doors, skylights, and even knocking down the interior walls, creating an open concept, which will allow you to use more space.

5. Limit yourself to placing decorations

Decorations and accessories are elements, which for interior decorators, can be in two extremes, either unnecessary or essential. And when talking about a small space, the fear of having something that is not practical often leads us not to implement any.

The reality is that no small environment, without something to adorn it, will look attractive. Therefore, do not be afraid, apply the decorations analyzing their location and proportions in detail.

Keep in mind that you shouldn't go overboard either, so use only a few embellishments in specific areas in your small room decor.

Table lamps are decorative pieces and at the same time essential, shelves are also functional by implementing few. But elements such as vases or centerpiece decorations, although they are for decoration, are necessary in the environment.

Successfully complete the challenge of decorating your small room, because just by avoiding these mistakes, your achievement is already guaranteed.
