Cloud storage.

In recent years, cloud storage has become very popular, it is a new, fairly new way to store files or host applications in the cloud. This is one of those technologies that has come to change everything.

It is normal for companies to use this type of storage today. However, there are several types of clouds, we have the private cloud and the public cloud.

Although they may seem similar, the truth is that they have some quite important differences.

In this short article we are going to be talking about these two types of clouds and which one is right for your company.

Public cloud vs. private cloud

Previously, when you were going to hire a hosting for your website, or for your application, you had to decide between two types of storage.

The first is a dedicated server in which you can enjoy all the resources of the team and the shared one. In the latter, your site shares the resources with other websites.

Now with cloud storage, you have to make a similar choice.

One option is the public cloud, which is the equivalent of a shared server in which a set of networked machines houses data from various sites.

The hardware is shared between several virtualized accounts, so the cost of the resource is shared.

However, unlike traditional shared hosting, the virtual server resources are delimited.

You don't share disk space, processing power, or anything else with any other account, you simply share rack space in data centers.

In effect, you get all the benefits of shared hosting, without any of the downsides.

If the public cloud is not what you are looking for, it is possible to create a private cloud configuration that does not share its infrastructure with any other account or site.

This obviously comes at a higher cost, but offers greater security and control.

Server resources are delimited within private clouds, which means there is no hardware sharing. All virtualized resource is behind its own firewall.

The benefits of this are pretty clear to anyone who has considered data security important. However, it limits the ability to access some of the most innovative cloud services.

Cloud storage vs. Traditional storage

So why has the hosting world moved away from dedicated server hosting to cloud technology? It is clear that it is a more complex (and more expensive) system to configure. There must be some major benefits, right?

Well yes, there are some pretty terrific benefits to using cloud technology instead of a traditional dedicated server.

Next, we will tell you what the main advantages are.

1) Reliability

If your website exists on a single machine and that machine disconnects, then your site disappears.

On the other hand, if your site is shared between a set of interconnected machines that store the same information and one of them goes offline, the others can supply it and the site remains online.

2) Scalability

Due to the underlying infrastructure of your cloud hosting setup, you have access to more system resources than you could ever need.

Even once they have been shared between all the different accounts in your public cloud configuration, there is a great deal of processing power in reserve for this purpose.

You can easily scale these resources, either with a quick phone call to your hosting company when you know you are expecting extra traffic, or by configuring your hosting architecture to automatically increase resources based on needs in real time.

Unlike a dedicated server setup, where a sudden spike in visitor numbers can cause the entire site to crash, cloud hosting ensures that your account can keep up with demand. Most importantly, you only pay for what you actually use.

3) Versatility

Cloud hosting is also incredibly versatile. More than ever, you can choose a custom solution that is tailored to your specific needs.

You don't have to choose from a list of standard packages, none of which probably suit your actual needs.

With a server in the cloud you will have greater control over what you need. You can define the amount of processing, storage or any other factor you need.

Is a server in the cloud the best option for a company?

This is a complex question, broadly speaking, cloud storage is a new technology that has many benefits. However, it is also more expensive than traditional storage.

Keep in mind that a cloud server is a high-performance server, so not all websites need this. Many just need a more basic accommodation, so traditional storage is ideal.

Should I choose a private or a public cloud?

This will depend on the needs of the company and what it uses this cloud for. In the event that you need the highest possible performance, a private cloud is likely the best option.

This option is ideal for those cases in which companies use high-performance applications.

If you don't need something like that, then the best option is a public cloud, it offers you the perfect balance between price, performance and security.

Most projects and websites use a public cloud, so this is usually sufficient. But as we have mentioned, this will mainly depend on your needs.
