Futurama: did it presage the invention of these technologies?
Futurama is one of the longest-running and cult animated series with a great impact on everyday life

Futurama is one of the many series that left its mark on contemporary times. Throughout its history, it served to nurture pop culture along with everything related to the cinematographic world.

Much of its episodes featured curiosities and parodies about current or future issues. Now, recently, the similarity that the program has with some new technologies was revealed.

What is Futurama about?

Futurama is an animated series that began its media career in March 1999. From then on, it was on the air for 10 seasons until the broadcast of its last chapter in 2013.

The first events of the series took place at the hands of the FOX network well into 2003. Later, it was decided not to continue showing the show at that time. However, Comedy Central acquired the rights for its renewal in 2008, extending it through 2013.

In general, it was produced and developed by the emblematic Matt Groening, also the creator of The Simpsons. His vision applied to this new program catapulted its immediate success.

The theme of Futurama transcends around a pizza delivery man named Philip James Fry. In a twist of fate, he is accidentally frozen in a cryogenic chamber that is opened a millennium later.

Thus, Fry unleashes his adventures in a totally futuristic world to which he will have to adapt. He went from being a simple employee in 1999 to a complete unknown in the culture of the moment.

Philip Fry is a character strongly rooted in general culture

The protagonist experiences different experiences that, originally, were simple fiction. The modern inventions raised there did not have any repercussion, at least at that time.

However, there is evidence that up to 4 technological milestones today are a reality. Technologies that, while not necessarily inspired by the series, were "foreshadowed" by it.

The controversial technological inventions that Futurama predicted

If something is recognized in Matt Groening, it is his ability to anticipate the future. With The Simpsons, he also faced a similar scenario to the point of extrapolating fictitious situations to the real world. It is clear, who has not been surprised by the famous "predictions" of this series?

Futurama is not far behind, indirectly encouraging the creation of technologies that were believed impossible. Although its impact is not as high as that of The Simpsons, there is no doubt that it is still an interesting show to analyze.

Suicide booth

It is perhaps the most controversial product created in 2017 by Philip Nitschke. Beyond being a cabin, it is actually a coffin that offers the ideal conditions for suicidal wishes.

The mechanism of action that it comprises is a chamber that is based on emitting nitrogen. Inside it, the user prostrates himself and begins to inhale said gas until producing death in a matter of minutes.

Futurama showed a suicide booth in one of its chapters, even though it's a touchy subject. The series was not precisely characterized by being subtle, so this kind of references dressed up by black humor were constant.

Same gender dating app

Grindr is the first dating or social app launched for gays and bisexuals. It is a wide community where it is possible to socialize between people with tastes towards the same or dual gender.

As such, he is not a carbon copy of what was voiced in the animated series. But, the resemblance it bears when compared to the controversial "Gaydar" is incredible. A radar that detected those who were attracted to others of the same sex.

Humanoid robots

One of the protagonists of the show is a robot with tastes for alcohol, nicotine and theft. Indeed, a thousand years later, robots are part of the cultural society in Futurama, with Bender being a clear example. An android with its own personality capable of engaging in conversations and reasoning.

Currently, the premise of humanoid robots continues to win carats in technology. Various projects have been announced around the world, among which the Tesla prototype, Elon Musk's company, stands out recently.

Robots "striptease" are one of the unusual attractions created by humans

A curious fact is that Futurama reveals robots that act as exotic dancers. The unusual thing is that in 2018, tycoon Giles Walker created and developed two androids with these characteristics. Since then, they are part of a private club in Nantes, France.

Virtual reality

Virtual reality is a concept that will be expanded in the "Metaverse" proposed by Mark Zuckerberg. The creator and president of Meta (formerly Facebook), is very focused on a project that will connect humanity in a revolutionary way.

In the illusion of the human being, it was always considered to be able to have access to such virtual scenarios. Although it is not something typical of Futurama, but seen in a variety of movies and series, the show showed a very similar invention.

The same was referred to in the program as "Oculus Rift", a pair of glasses (glasses) to connect to a virtual reality world. Without a doubt, another point in favor of the popular animated series.
