What is aphasia?

Aphasia is a language disorder caused by brain damage, characterized by difficulty or inability to communicate and affects speech, writing and reading.

It can also originate due to infections, brain tumors or dementia. Its severity varies depending on the part of the brain that is damaged, and although some people manage to recover without treatment, others require speech therapy.

Among the symptoms that those who suffer from the disease may present are the inability to complete long sentences, say incoherencies, substitute words, mispronunciation and nonsense writing.

In the United States, about a million people suffer from this disease, according to the National Aphasia Association, and they register about 180,000 new cases annually.
