Cuba: "The United States cannot give lessons on human rights
Carlos Fernandez deCossio

The Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs, Carlos Fernández de Cossio, criticized the United States for having a "disastrous" Human Rights policy and democratic processes that benefit the population.

Carlos Fernández, through a press conference, indicated that the United States uses the issue of human rights to carry out attacks on countries with which it has political differences.

He added that all the countries of the world, including Cuba, must improve in terms of human rights.

These statements were given when the US embargo is about to turn 60, which was decreed on February 3, 1962. Currently, the United States has redoubled its criticism of the strong condemnations of the protesters of the events of July 11, 2021 in Cuba.

The Undersecretary of State for Western Hemisphere Affairs, Brian Nichols, through the social network Twitter, indicated that the freedom to express oneself and the right to a fair trial are universal rights that every nation must preserve.

Deputy Minister Carlos Fernández warned that the pretexts of the United States are a "fallacy", since he considers that it uses them as a justification to apply a policy that is rejected by a large part of the world and by a large part of US citizens.

Seven days ago, the Cuban justice would have recognized for the first time in decades that almost 1,000 protesters have been imprisoned, of which 172 are sentenced through a process where the right to defense has been guaranteed.

The prosecution highlighted that the protests of July last year, where hundreds of thousands of Cubans took to the streets to demonstrate, took place in the context of the economic and commercial blockade that the United States has increased.

During Donald Trump's term, sanctions against Cuba multiplied. Trump prohibited US cruise ships from stopping off the coast of Cuba, threatened to sue foreign companies operating in the country and added Cuba to the list of countries linked to terrorism.

The deputy minister stated that the level of the economic blockade is the highest in years.

"We must not forget" added the deputy minister, referring to the fact that at the beginning and during the pandemic, when the whole world applied solidarity as a policy, the United States increased the sanctioning economic measures.

He highlights that the "cruelty" of the measures at that time is something that Cuba will not forget for generations.

The current President of the United States, Joe Biden, had promised in his campaign a new policy towards Cuba, raised the possibility of lifting sanctions on American travel and would allow the sending of remittances in a private way.

So far no sanction has been revoked.

The deputy minister explained that at the time, there were reasons to ensure that they were sensible promises.

But with the passing of days, the US government has shown no signs of reforming the policy, which, according to the deputy minister, a large part of the US political class and its officials know is failed and immoral.
