Democrats are disappointed in Biden for disinterest in plan "Stay in Mexico"

A group of congressmen and senators from the Democratic Party recently sent a letter to the President of the United States, Joe Biden, in which they expressed their disappointment at the inaction regarding the "Stay in Mexico" program, which seeks to keep Mexico in the Aztec country. Migrants seeking asylum.

The letter that came out to the international press, indicates that the representatives of the two Houses of Congress express their concern, in addition to being alarmed that the program, created by Donald Trump has been resumed and expanded, since now it also forces Haitians to stay in Mexico while their asylum status is resolved.

Legislators Bob Menéndez and Verónica Escobar, lead the request of the group of Democrats, who explain that, according to the adjustment made by Biden to the plan, the border ports have been expanded, where migrants who go to the United States in search of asylum, and they also highlight that the shelters where they are sent no longer have space to receive more people.

They assure that Biden's decision, by reorganizing the “Stay in Mexico” plan, does not provide real solutions to the issue of migration, as was raised by Trump at the time. On the contrary, they consider it a cruel and dissuasive policy on the part of their Administration.

It should be noted that the letter is signed by 13 senators and 23 members of the Chamber, all from the Democratic Party, so it is believed, this is a pressure that the party is carrying out.

Biden Stock

Since coming to power, Joe Biden had promised a new way of immigration policy, in fact, he repealed Trump's "Stay in Mexico" program, however, a federal judge ruled that this had no return and forced the White House to implement the plan.

Despite Biden's apparent good intentions, in trying to curb the anti-immigrant program, what has worried Democratic legislators is that the US president made changes, such as that asylum seekers can only have one lawyer for 24 hours, while they are in the custody of the United States authorities.

On the other hand, the Biden Administration has also not proposed any alternative plan to provide support to migrants who applied for asylum in the Donald Trump administration, and who were still in Mexico.

Human rights

Human rights activists have also spoken out since the US authorities established the resumption of the program, since only between January 2019 and February 2021, of the 68 thousand people who were returned to Mexico to await a response to their request for Asylum, at least 1,500 were victims of violence of all kinds: kidnapping, murder and rape.

For this reason, they have raised their voice in different instances, to force Biden to take concrete actions that favor the rights of migrants, since the vast majority of them flee their countries of origin due to violence, hunger or the situation politics.
