Against violence, journalists in Mexico have organized demonstrations for this Tuesday in 22 cities in the country, to denounce the murder of Lourdes Maldonado López, Margarito Martínez Esquivel and José Luis Gamboa Arenas, executed in just fourteen days.

In this event, there will be a reading of a joint agreement and a list of names of all the murdered journalists.

Correspondents, columnists, communicators and graphic reporters will hold demonstrations in: CDMX, Tijuana, Toluca, Piedras Negras, Cancún, Monterrey, Chilpancingo, Córdoba, Chiapas, Mérida, Orizaba, Veracruz, Morelia, Colima, Mazatlán, Culiacán, Chihuahua, Guadalajara, Acapulco, Xalapa, Uruapan, and Campeche.

The organizers recommend using the hashtags on social networks : #NiSilencioNiOlvido, #NoSeMataLaVerdad, #SinMasPeriodistasEnSusListas and #PeriodismoEnRiesgo.

Murders this new year

On Sunday, January 23, Maldonado López was assassinated in the city of Tijuana. On Monday, January 17, Martínez Esquivel, a photojournalist, was shot multiple times in the Sánchez Taboada area, in Baja California;

On January 10, Gamboa Arenas received several cuts in the Port of Veracruz.

Official statements

President Andrés Manuel López Obrador lamented the murder of Lourdes Maldonado this Monday in his question and answer session.

However, he removed his administration from the grievances against journalists, arguing that violence, corruption and inequality have been inherited from his predecessors.

The largest record of murder of journalists has been in the government of Javier Duarte, in which 18 communicators were murdered, including the photojournalist Rubén Espinosa.
