Learn about the Martial Law declared in Ukraine
The measure will take effect from 5:30 a.m. on February 24 and will be valid for 30 days.
These last hours, Vladimir Putin has been executing a military operation in the Ukrainian territory after several weeks of tension on the borders of Russia and Ukraine. For this, Ukraine has declared Martial Law.
Volodimir Zelenski has ordered the activation of Martial Law, a military measure of complete power over certain areas.
Martial Law is an exception rule that is applied over the ordinary legal norms within a determined territory.
Therefore, this law allows the Police and the Armed Forces certain extraordinary powers with respect to the protection of public order and the administration of the jurisdiction.
This could even lead to the suspension of civil rights, conditioning the handling of Martial Law by the authorities.
It is important to highlight that it is activated only when countries are in difficult situations and have urgent needs.
It also influences the ability of the nation's institutions to gain control of its territory in the process of rebellions, wars, or demonstrations.
In addition, all the entities that make up said country must lend support to each action carried out by the military authorities.
Objectives of Martial Law
The objective of this law is to preserve public order while a conflict is taking place, either to avoid looting, conflicts, demonstrations and the complete anarchy of the territory. Therefore, these actions can be taken:
Curfew
punishments
Military Law Enforcement to Civilians
Called to combat civilians
Suspension of civil rights
Apart from activating this law, Volodimir Zelensky has ordered the complete closure of the airspace due to the Russian bombing.
Also, the President of Ukraine reported that Russia has been attacking the entire military infrastructure and border guards. In addition, explosions have been heard in a large part of the cities, therefore, martial law has been imposed throughout the national territory.
