One year after the assault on the capitol in the United States
Biden addressed the country in commemoration of the attack on the capitol.
US President Joe Biden said Thursday that former Republican President Donald Trump "tried to prevent a change of power peacefully" in a speech from Capitol Hill to mark the anniversary of the attack on the Capitol by Republican allies, in which five people were killed, including a police officer.
US Vice President Kamala Harris, speaking from the Capitol minutes before the president, said the attack on January 6, 2021 showed Americans what the nation would look like if the democratic system were destroyed.
Jen Psaki, a representative of the White House, had predicted on Wednesday that the president would not measure his words and that during the speech he would blame Trump, "the only one responsible for the chaos and carnage" that occurred in the assault.
As far as he is concerned, Trump intended to hold a question and answer session on Thursday about the commemoration of the assault from his home in Mar-a-Lago, Florida, in protest at the investigations into the assault. however, it was canceled due to the "impartiality" of the Congressional Commission.
"Trump's Web of Lies"
In his speech, Biden began by saying that "democracy was stormed" and congratulates law enforcement for preserving the rule of law.
Biden has mentioned that former President Trump created a "web of lies" about the 2020 political campaign, also blaming him for inciting violence on the day of the attack on the capitol.
"His wounded ego matters more to him than our democracy and our Constitution. He cannot accept that he lost," he added in the anniversary speech.
The President of the United States has addressed the Americans and the country's congressmen to define what kind of country they want to be.
"Are we going to be a country that accepts political violence as the norm? Are we going to be a country in which we allow electoral officials to annul the law? Are we going to be a country that lives in the shadow of lies? We cannot afford to be this kind of nation, "Biden said.
Republican statement
The Republican leader in the US Upper House, Mitch McConnel 1, who a year earlier pointed out Trump directly as responsible for what happened on Capitol Hill, on Thursday blamed the Democrats for politically "taking advantage" of the commemoration of the assault.
"It has been surprising to see a few Democrats in Washington trying to exploit this commemoration for sectarian political profit that existed long before this event," said McConnell, who called the attack a "gloomy day for Congress and for our country."
