Rescuers work to save the life of a boy who fell into a well in Afghanistan
Secretary to Deputy Prime Minister Abdul Ghani Baradar, Abdullah Azzam, reports progress via Twitter.

Since Tuesday -February 15-, a six (6) year old boy has been trapped in a 25-meter-deep well, located in a town in the southeastern province of Afghanistan.

Deputy Prime Minister Abdul Ghani Baradar's secretary, Abdullah Azzam, reported via Twitter that “Efforts to save Haidar, the boy stranded in a well in Zabul, are still underway. More efforts are required and everything possible is done.”

He added that top officials have been in touch and are providing whatever is needed to save him.

Additionally, he indicated that they have a public health team with an ambulance, oxygen cylinders and other necessary things. "The child's health is fine and sometimes he asks for food and water," Azzam said.

Rescue work

Zabiullah Jawhar, a spokesman for the Zabul province police, explained that the rescue efforts have advanced about three meters deep, but have been achieved with a large stone obstructing the way.

To continue operations they require a drilling machine, which was requested from the neighboring province of Kandahar, which "is on its way", the spokesman said.

Through images obtained by a camera lowered with a rope to the place where the child is, you can see the little boy trapped at the bottom of the well, lying with his back against the wall and having mobility of his arms and upper body.

Likewise, his father was able to communicate with him, “Haidar, talk to me, we are trying to get you out. Are you okay, my son? Talk to me and don't cry, we're working to get you out."

For his part, Haidar replied, "Okay, I'll keep talking."

The economic crisis that the country has been going through for six months, as a result of international sanctions against the Islamist group, makes it even more difficult to access the necessary resources to attend to emergencies and basic needs in the country.
