The countries with the most murders of environmentalists
Latin America is undoubtedly the place where the most murders have occurred in 2018, almost half of these events occurred in this area.
In the past year, 164 murders were registered, countries such as Colombia, Brazil, Guatemala and Mexico are considered the most dangerous countries for environmental defenders.
These data were thrown in the report carried out by the organization Global Witness, where it is stated that more than three environmentalists were murdered per week in these countries. In addition, it is announced that the main implicated in threats to environmentalists and defenders of the territory are the state and private groups.
As is well known, many of the cases remain in total impunity, but the Global Witness report assured that 40 of the 164 murders were at the hands of state security. And others perpetuated by criminal entities such as landowner hitmen among others.
Development banks are invested in projects that give way to these events and many are part of it. The cases where there is more room for these murders are when environmentalists struggle not to make way for mining or oil exploitation.
