Yingying's disappearance occurred in June 2017 and the whereabouts of her body are still unknown. The culprit of this kidnapping was put as a suspect when it became known that he had participated in "perfect kidnapping" conversations on a BDSM fan forum.

After contacting Christensen's girlfriend, the FBI got her to collaborate and implanted a recording device in which it was possible to record the moment in which the man confesses to having kidnapped, raped, beaten with a bat and beheaded the victim.

The sentencing trial lasted five weeks in Peoria, and the defendant claimed that Yingying Zhang was the "ideal victim."

Yingying's parents wanted the person guilty of the murder to suffer at least part of the pain that events happen after the loss of their daughter and what she suffered when the attempt on her life.

Zhang's boyfriend also showed deep pain and anger upon hearing Hou Xiaolin 's sentence, and launched strong criticism of the American judicial system:

The results seem to me to say that I can kill anyone, with all sorts of cruel methods. And that I'm not going to die for it. For me, today's results encourage people to commit crimes. And I, I, I will never agree with that, "he said.
