The United States and Spain reach agreements to resolve the Western Sahara conflict
The Spanish Minister of Foreign Affairs, José Manuel Albares, tried to convey a message in Washington on Tuesday of rapprochement with the United States in the dispute over Western Sahara, in which the two nations have different positions.
Albares said, after meeting with his US counterpart, Antony Blinken, that the two governments reached an agreement to work on a solution.
Donald Trump, just weeks after handing over his power in December 2020, decreed the recognition of Moroccan power in Western Sahara.
The decision, taken outside the United Nations, has become problematic for the Joe Biden government, a decision that is very difficult to reverse.
It has not yet been revoked by Biden, in addition, Spain maintains its position that the conflict will find a solution through negotiations between the Polisario Front and Rabat.
Albares has addressed the issue in his first meeting with Blinken in Washington, on a visit aimed at preparing the NATO summit to be held in June in Madrid.
The minister points out that they managed to join forces to finally find a solution to a "too extensive" conflict. He added that there are many people waiting for answers.
The minister informed the press that this Friday he will meet in Madrid with a UN emissary for the Western Sahara conflict, Staffan de Mistura, after the ambassador's visit to the region.
Apart from the conflict in Ukraine, Albares and Blinken have spoken about the situation in Venezuela. Washington became one of the main allies of Juan Guaidó and promoter as interim president against the Chavista system of Nicolás Maduro.
Spain supported him along with most of the international community, but after three years Maduro continues to govern. Albares pointed out that everything possible should be done so that the dialogue between the government and the opposition takes place again, in addition, he added that the solution must come from the people of Venezuela.
At the beginning of the meeting, Antony Blinken stated that in "challenging" times, such as these, it is extremely positive to have allies and friends like Spain.
After the meeting with Blinken, Albares was scheduled to meet with the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Democrat Nancy Pelosi, the country's third authority, as well as with the Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), Luis Almagro, and with the president of the Ibero-American Development Bank (IDB), Mauricio Claver-Carone.
