United States will employ the use of robot dogs for the border with Mexico
The US government is creating "robot dogs" with the ability to climb stairs and climb walls, in order to serve as support for agents of the Customs and Border Protection Office to monitor the border with Mexico in the southern part of the country.
The Directorate of Science and Technology of the Department of Homeland Security pointed out that the southern border of the United States is an area that presents high temperatures and human threats, which can be a problem for the authorities that patrol the area.
It is for this reason that CBP will now have the advanced technology that will be able to strengthen the capacity of its personnel in addition to increasing security.
Brenda Long, program manager for S&T, added that the southern border can be a dangerous place for humans and animals and that is why they developed the robot so that it can stand out.
She explained that the program is focused on Automated Ground Surveillance Vehicles (AGSV) and will be called robot dogs.
The purpose of the use of technology is to multiply the presence of the CBP to reduce the exposure that could lead to dangers for humans at the border.
The CBP would have asked S&T for a four-legged drone for which Brenda Long developed the "robot dog".
In collaboration with the company Ghost Robotics, which develops robotic technology, AGSV took the opportunity to design the robot dog for use in CBP missions.
Ghost Robotics Product Manager Gavin Kenneally said that the robot dog weighs approximately 100 pounds and has been created to perform the required job.
He highlighted that it is resistant and can traverse all types of natural terrain, such as sand, rocky terrain and hills, as well as stairs.
For more than two years, S&T, Ghost Robotics and CBP have worked on the specific development and testing of the robots, developing simulations in realistic scenarios.
The team planned the integration of cameras, sensors and communication devices for the robots, as well as the devices required to be controlled from a laptop or remote control.
