US embassy in Baghdad was attacked with missiles
A woman and a minor girl were injured in the incident.
Three of four projectiles hit the area of the US embassy, while a fourth missile hit a school near a residential area. The alleged perpetrators of the attack would be pro-Iranian Shia groups in Iraq.
Iraqi officials reported that 4 missiles were launched at the US embassy. The seat of the Iraqi government is also located in the area.
According to local sources, the missiles would have been fired from the Dora neighborhood in Baghdad, which fell in the territory.
Through a statement, the US embassy in Baghdad said that its offices had been raided by different terrorist groups that seek to break the sovereignty, security of Iraq, and also international relations.
The C-RAM, an embassy defense system, which is designed to detect and destroy missiles, as well as other types of projectiles, activated its alarms upon detecting the attack.
This missile and drone attack marks the first of the year against the US presence in Iraq. This after two years have passed since the United States ordered the attack against Qassim Soleimani, where the Commander of the Iraqi Army, Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis, was also killed.
The condition of the ceasefire by the Shia groups that support Iran is the withdrawal of US troops from Iraq. This faction had promised revenge, after the attack on Soleimani.
The United States was leading a fighting coalition that formally ended last month.
This alliance consisted of providing arms and operational support for the armed struggle against the Islamic state. The coalition will currently change to an advisory mission and only 2,500 US troops will remain.
