Frankfurt UEFA Europa League champion
This Thursday the UEFA Europa League final was held between Frankfurt from Germany against Rangers from Scotland at the Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán stadium in Seville, Spain.
The game was hotly contested, so much so that it went into extra time and was later decided on penalties. Notably, Eintracht are the only Bundesliga team to win this competition since 1997 when Schalke beat Inter Milan, also on penalties. It is his second Europa League after 42 years.
The match began with the dominance of the German team that during the first minutes imposed their conditions on the pitch and generated scoring chances. The first clear for the 'eagles' came in the 12th minute when Kamada got into the small area managing to evade some defenders and tried to finish off from the floor, but the goalkeeper stopped her.
The rebound was left to Sow who quickly took a shot from the edge of the area that goalkeeper McGregor again stopped without problems. At 18', Knauff entered the area and cut inside to then take a left-footed shot, but failed to convert.
At minute 30, the Germans once again disturbed the Scots' goal and this time through Kostic, who took a mid-range shot from the right side of the area that ended up going over the top of the net. In this way they would end with a goalless draw and would go to rest.
Starting the second half, Rangers would wake up with clear scoring chances. Kent at 53', had a one-on-one with the goalkeeper after Aribo passed it to him, but the Scottish team's striker didn't hit the ball well.
However, at 55', Aribo took advantage of a defensive error to be left alone with the goalkeeper and falling, he sent it creeping down the left and thus converted the 0-1 partial. Rangers took the lead, causing a surprise in a stadium that had witnessed the clear dominance of the Germans in the first half.
Eintracht began to generate some chances and at 65', Rangers went wrong and the Germans took advantage, Rode passed it to Kamada who took out a 'Vaseline' that failed to beat McGregor.
But four minutes later, Frankfurt takes a quick ball from the left wing and Kostic sends a low cross into the area that Rafael Santos Borré manages to deflect, anticipating the defender and sending it into the back of the net. Momentary tie on the scoreboard and a final disputed in Pizjuán was expected.
But neither team would generate clear chances after the draw and in this way regulation time would end and they would go into extra time. The first half would be all for the Germans with chances for Borré, Knauff and Kamada ; but the Scottish team, with five on defense, would stop any Eintracht action and thus end the first extra time.
For the second period of extra time, Rangers would try to score the victory, at minute 118, Kent would take advantage of finishing off a low cross that would come from the right and take a shot from the penalty spot, but Kevin Trapp would stop with his leg and so the second extra time would end and they would go to the penalty shootout.
In the selection, it would be decided that the one who would start the launches from the eleven steps would be the Rangers and the side of the field would be that of the Scots fans. The Blues' first three pitches were scored by Tavernier, Davies and Arfield; For their part, Lenz, Hrustic and Kamada did the same for Frankfurt. 3-3 partial.
But when Rangers' Aaron Ramsey took his penalty, Kevin Trapp managed to save with his left foot. The goalkeeper of the German team was already a figure thanks to his leg.
Kostic gave Eintracht the momentary lead. Roofe tied momentarily and then the Colombian Borré converted the final 5-4 and thus managed to get his team to lift the Europa League. The Germans had just beaten Barcelona in the quarterfinals and West Ham in the semifinal.
The Colombian Santos Borré scored the fourth goal in the competition in this final. One of them in the second leg of the quarter-final against Barcelona, another in the second leg of the semi-final against West Ham and the one in the final that took the game to extra time.
The German team will play the next UEFA Champions League, since they won the Europa League and for this reason there will be five Bundesliga teams in the next edition of the most competitive club tournament in the world.
