Sevilla wins and Barcelona draws goalless at the Camp Nou
This Thursday, Sevilla received West Ham at the Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán stadium for the first leg of the UEFA Europa League round of 16, a fairly balanced duel that ended with a goal from the home team to obtain victory.
Everything will be decided next Thursday, March 17 in London, but the six-time champions have a significant advantage, although the tie is still very open and any team can qualify for the quarterfinals.
Lopetegui came out with a team diminished by several casualties, where the absences of Rakitic and Rafa Mir, who were substitutes, stand out. The game began with several chances for the home team, Munir had one in the 3rd minute with a header that went close to the goal defended by Aréola.
West Ham were quick to react with a shot from Michail Antonio that hit the side of the net at 4'. The rest of the first half were good chances for En-Nesyri, Ocampos, Koundé, Oliver Torres and Munir on the part of the locals, but they went wide or Aréola stopped them with his great performance under the three posts.
On the part of the 'hammers', Vlasic was the most outstanding with two very clear occasions that Bono knew how to stop. At minute 38 the same Moroccan goalkeeper gave the scare by showing pain in one of his ankles, but he quickly got back up and the referee resumed the match. With that partial tie they would go to rest.
At 47', there was a great attack by the visitors that started from Michail Antonio in the area who lowered a ball with his back to the goal and served it to Soucek, who took a shot from the edge of the area and the Sevilla goalkeeper it returns to being a figure when stopping that action.
Sevilla grew with more chances from En-Nesyri, Ocampos and Munir, until in minute 59, Acuña took a corner looking for the far post and Munir appeared totally unmarked and hit him with a volley to send him into the back of the net. The English goalkeeper was petrified with nothing to do. Final 1-0.
Other clear situations came for Sevilla through Ocampos and Lanzini had two from the visitors, but failed to finish off on goal. In this way, the home team achieved victory by the minimum, waiting for the second leg in London on March 17.
Galatasaray achieves a significant draw against Barça
The story was different at the Camp Nou. Xavi's men received Galatasaray in the first leg of the round of 16, but neither team managed to beat the goal, so everything will be decided in Turkey next week.
The culé coach left Piqué, Busquets, Dembelé, Luuk De Jong on the bench and came out with his usual 4-3-3 with Adama, Torres and Depay in attack. The match began with a few chances for the home team led by Alba, Ferrán and Adama.
However, at 26' the Turks committed a foul at the edge of the area that Depay charged and the shot went over the barrier, but Iñaki Peña stopped it with a great stretch, which would have other good participations throughout the match.
The visitors only had one clear chance in the first half and it was through Akturkoglu at 36', he took a shot inside the area that Eric García grazed and went to the corner, touching the crossbar. With that marker they would go to rest.
Starting the second half , Xavi took out Araujo, Nico and Ferran and brought in Dembelé, Piqué and Busquets. The same dynamic continued, the blaugranas dominated the game and created some chances. At 57', Busquets heads a center that Iñaki Peña manages to stop with a great action.
Then at 61' Depay leaves and Aubameyang enters. The clearest of Barça would reach 75 ', in a fortuitous play that ends up splicing Aubameyang from the Chilean, but the ball remains as a pass to Frenkie De Jong and he hits him as he can and the ball hits the left post and is returned. The goalkeeper manages to stop.
However, the scare for the locals came in a quick against the Turks who gave Gomis a pass appealing to his speed, went hand in hand with Ter Stegen and defined at the back of the net at minute 78. The goal was disallowed because the striker was offside.
The last clear chance of danger for Barcelona came through Dembelé at 86'. He was encouraged to hit him from the edge of the area, but the ball went a little high over the goal. This is how the match ended with a score of 0-0 and everything to be defined next Thursday, March 17 in Turkey.
