HBO overtakes Netflix to top Emmys nominations again
With a history-record 137 award nominations, HBO is back in total nominations for its series at the most famous television awards. The competition with streaming services has created an annual fight that Netflix won last year with 112 nominations, compared to 108 for premium cable TV channel HBO.
On this occasion, Netflix with 117 nominations escorts HBO, in a battle that has become normal year after year between the largest of the cable television service and streaming, respectively. Prior to 2018, HBO had a 17-year run with the highest number of Emmy Award nominations.
Winners define everything at the Emmys
It became clear last year that the nominations do not necessarily show a winner on the night of the awards ceremony, in the case of Netflix Vs HBO although Netflix took the lead on the famous premium cable channel, when it came to receiving statuettes both had similar number, 23 statuettes each in 2018.
This year, with the Game of Thrones phenomenon on what seems to be its peak after its eighth and final season (we don't know how successful the prequel could be next year), plus an all-time record for this HBO series of 32 nominations. It seems that this time the largest number of nominations will mark the final trend of winners at the Emmy.
Other series that affect the battle HBO - Netflix In the series the apparent trend continues to incline in favor of HBO with Chernobyl standing out not only in number of nominations (19 nominees for the 3rd series with the highest number), it also stands out for being a new miniseries with a somewhat complex issue such as the Chernobyl nuclear disaster.
If we take into account that between the first series with the most nominations and the third, both from HBO, there is a second place for the comedy series The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel (20 nominations), which does not belong to HBO but neither to Netflix nor to the third place in nominees which is the NBC channel with 58 nominations, the projections seem to be even clearer.
The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel is from Amazone Prime Video, who came in fourth in total nominations for their series with 47 nominations. As if that were not enough, in comedy the series that is directly competing for awards with The Marvelous Mrs Maisel is "Barry," with 17 nominations for the 2019 Emmys Awards. Yes, you guessed it, the comedy series Barry is from HBO.
In only 3 series, all with the opportunity to win several awards in their respective themes and categories, HBO has 69 nominations, with obtaining half of those statuettes (and Game of Thrones could be a decisive factor for this), the premium channel HBO could be rising this year as a big winner in the battle with Netflix and perhaps with a record number, on the night of the awards ceremony.
