Meta and her new supercomputer created for the metaverse
On the way to the development of the metaverse, recently Meta has announced the creation of a supercomputer with great processing capabilities.
The company that owns platforms such as Facebook, WhatsApp and Instagram, announced a computer known as "AI Research SuperCluster"; RSC in its acronym in English. In essence, this is a new team that is primarily intended for the metaverse.
Meta announces its supercomputer
Mark Zuckerberg, visionary par excellence, has between eyebrows and eyebrows to achieve the metaverse as soon as possible. To do this, really advanced equipment is needed both in artificial intelligence and in data processing capacity.
Following this line, he has announced a supercomputer that he himself proclaims as “the fastest computer in the world”. In a statement, he stated the following:
"Developing the next generation of advanced AI will require powerful new computers capable of performing quintillion operations per second."
Indeed, it is a big step for Meta to be able to carry out the idea they have about a digital world. And it is that, for the new technologies of augmented reality, virtual and artificial intelligence, many digital tools are needed.
What is sought with the creation of the fastest computer in the world?
Basically, Meta begins to lay the foundations of what the metaverse will be, and for this it imposes what is supposed to be the main tool.
In this sense, our current computers will not be enough to be immersed in the new world that Zuckerberg is preparing. And it is that, it is due to the large amount of data and information that a computer must process at the same time for optimal performance.
Research support
Its main task will be to support the research that is currently being carried out to optimize artificial intelligence. In this way, exponential progress will be made in order to establish teaching protocols that allow endless functions for AI.
Specifically, what is sought is that the data processing has the characteristic of being carried out in real time. Everything, with the aim that different functions can be carried out at the same time, at great speed.
From here, the supercomputer will be able to translate conversations between people who do not speak the same language, instantly. In addition, it will have the ability to read multimedia data, analyze texts and process information in the background.
Designed for the metaverse
There is no doubt that the great capacity in data reading is designed to support the future processes of the metaverse. Although it may take a long time for it to become a reality, the truth is that we are facing one of the fastest computers in the world.
To go into detail, the new Meta team will feature a combined 760 Nvidia DGX A100 systems, made up of around 6,080 GPUs.
The highlight comes in its storage, as its capacity reaches up to 175 petabytes of Pure Storage FlashArray. It also packs up to 46 petabytes of cache for Penguin Computing Atlus systems, and 10 petabytes of Pure Storage FlashBlade.
To understand the magnitude of storage capacity, we must remember that 1 petabyte translates to one million gigabytes. Or, which is equal to one thousand terabytes.
However, these are only preliminary data, since the computer is still under development. In this sense, Mark explained that it is expected to reach up to 16,000 GPUs.
How would your performance be?
Its processing of information in the training of artificial intelligence protocols is expected to reach 16 terabytes per second. However, they do not rule out that they can expand it to 1 exabyte.
But, its true potential will be seen when it has all the elements integrated, thus forming a supercomputer that performs processes in the blink of an eye.
In the same order of ideas, the forecasts of the researchers, as well as the development of the technical team expect an unmatched performance. To go into detail, the Meta supercomputer could achieve 5 exaflops of mixed-precision computation.
Translated into Spanish, it is as if a flop unit (value to measure the performance of a computer) will represent the action of walking in humans. So when we talk about exaflops, we are practically referring to the speed of light.
Therefore, we would be talking about more than 100,000 desktop computers, combined into one. Everything, with the aim of achieving a computer that processes data and translates computer languages in a matter of thousandths of a second.
What is expected of the metaverse with this new addition?
There is still a long way to go before the metaverse establishes itself as a sustainable and viable digital environment for its access. And it is that, barely, the companies are in the research and development stages, a process in which they invest millions of dollars.
However, with Meta as the standard-bearer, the metaverse is predicted to have a huge impact on the way people live.
In particular, its goal has always been to use technology as a means to eradicate exclusion in social settings.
Therefore, this digital universe will be an alternative for people with disabilities, where they can lead their lives autonomously without depending on anything.
On the other hand, the implementation of CSR is necessary, since in the future we will see more applications related to artificial intelligence.
And it is that, the correct implementation of AI products and applications must have a medium with a high processing capacity.
At this point, this is where the new creation of Mark Zuckerberg comes in, who is always at the forefront of technological advances.
