Man arrested for trying to sell whale vomit in India
Rahul Tupare, 53, was involved in a bizarre incident in Nagpur, India, where he tried to illegally sell more than a kilo of whale vomit worth nearly $250,000.
The ambergris is different from the fluids expelled by the human being, it is a rather strange wax with a very high value, which is secreted from the intestines of the whales.
The main purpose of this fluid is the protection of the whales, so that the squid they feed on do not pierce their huge stomach.
This fluid is also known as "floating gold" and is found in tropical seas. It is used in the production of perfumes, since it is resistant to evaporation.
Local police set the man up after they were notified that an attempt was being made to sell this fluid, which resembles a stone, at a local train station.
The man was arrested for violating the Wildlife Protection Law. This law makes it illegal to sell any part of an endangered animal.
This type of whale, called a sperm whale, is in danger of extinction, therefore, it is protected by this law.
During the interrogation with the accused, it was revealed that another man named Lalit Vyas was arrested, who would have been the one who provided the fluid to Tupare for sale.
On occasions, people have obtained this "floating gold" on the shores of the beaches when walking, however, it is estimated that this man obtained the whale vomit through a scam or through animal abuse, according to the local police.
A police officer involved in the investigation told local media that this ambergris is very difficult to find and in most cases is exported to the Gulf where it is sold at high prices.
The fishermen of the region consider this vomit to be a fortune, and they suspect that they may have killed a whale to obtain it, and this is what they seek to clarify with the investigation.
