New variant of Covid-19 in France

This new variant of COVID-19 was identified at the beginning of December 2021, by a group of French researchers, who qualified it as an "IHU Variant" named B.1.640.2.

The researchers who made the discovery belong to the University Hospital Institute of Marseille, which is why they named the variant with its initials.

Content of the new variant

A peculiar element in the IHU is that it contains 46 mutations with it, thus determining, more dangerous than omicron.

These 46 mutations are confirmed by the 12 carriers, who were strictly analyzed, and in addition to presenting these, they have 37 deletions, which is not similar to any of the variants already developed, such as delta, omicron or mu.

It is important to highlight that one of its different mutations is associated with a possible increase in the transmission of the virus.

Origins of the new variant

Although it was officially identified a few weeks ago by French scientists, it is known that its origins derive from another virus, and that its first cases were reported in the month of September, in the year 2021 in the Republic of Congo.

On the part of the center specialized in infectious diseases, directed and founded by the doctor Didier Raoult, the first cases were known in the town of Forcalquier, an area located in the department of Alpes de Haute Provence.
