This innovative robotic system is a pioneer in Puerto Rico and throughout the Caribbean. In addition to being practical, it has benefits that help the patient to recover quickly and with less pain.

This modern system has the particularity of performing a personalized study before the operation, in which the surgeon can better evaluate the patient's body and therefore make the necessary adjustments in a more accurate and professional manner.

Antonio Otero López, director of the Orthopedics Program at the School of Medicine, mentioned feeling happy to perform the intervention, since it was the first of its kind in Puerto Rico.

"I am proud and happy to have the opportunity to perform this intervention, which is the first in Puerto Rico and the Caribbean, using the MAKO robot. It records the information from the CT Scan and the patient's anatomy so that the robotic arm can later perform the cuts, under the direction of the surgeon," he said.

Also, this new trading technique has a quality; and it is that it allows the release of less dissection and soft tissue, which is beneficial for patients, because they can recover without much pain and in a short time.

This considerably improves the well-being of patients, who can leave the hospital sooner and rehabilitate themselves better and more efficiently from home, said the specialist.

Similarly, the Executive Director of the Hospital UPR Dr. Federico Trilla, Yelitza Sánchez, expressed her emotion for this great achievement and congratulated the surgical staff who participated in this operation.

He stressed that with this new practice they begin a new era within the institution and the Orthopedics program of the Medical Sciences Campus.

"The use of this technology gives us the option of giving our patients a shorter stay and a faster recovery, also benefiting their quality of life and allowing them to return to their daily activities more quickly," he emphasized.

For his part, Dr. Richard Blasini, who has extensive and verifiable experience in knee and hip replacement at the hospital, assured that "this technology is going to revolutionize treatment for patients with knee and hip discomfort, since the precision that offers contributes to a better implant fit".

Finally, people who are interested in learning more about this procedure with robotic assistance, or have certain doubts regarding the entire process, can contact the Puerto Rico Orthopedic Center of the UPR Hospital — Dr. Federico through Social Networks. Threshing.
