Young man was amputated of both legs and fingers of the hands for eating damaged food
Shortly after ingesting them, he felt bad, so he decided to go to the hospital in Massachusetts, where he was admitted to the ICU (Intensive Care Unit).
A 19-year-old boy, living in the city of Boston, United States, ate leftovers from poorly stored food and acquired a strong bacterium that seriously complicated his health and had to amputate both legs and all his fingers.
The boy, known as JC, was a college student living in Boston. He lived with a classmate, and he left rice, chicken and "lo mein" noodles in the fridge, and the young man ate them without imagining that they were contaminated.
While in the hospital, he suffered from organ problems and chills for several days. As the situation worsened and to safeguard his life, the doctors were forced to amputate his lower extremities and his fingers.
According to the medical report, the young man suffered a "progressive worsening" since he was admitted to the hospital. There he was given the necessary medical attention and was diagnosed with "shock, multiple organ failure and rash".
After carrying out all the regulatory tests, it was detected that the name of the disease he acquired is meningococcal, a condition caused by the bacterium Neisseria meningitidis, which is extremely dangerous, capable of causing brain damage in people who suffer from it.
In addition, he contracted "fulminant purpura," a disease that blocks normal blood circulation in various parts of the body, causes purple patches on the skin, chest pain, trouble breathing, blurred vision, and damages vital organs such as the heart and lungs.
For its part, the United States food protection and safety services recommended that the general population check their food and cook it correctly and also refrigerate it properly. Knowing that the safe and recommended storage temperature is 4 °C.
Although this case occurred in March 2021, and was published by the medical journal The New England Medical, a few days ago the news of it circulated again on social networks and new details of the case were known.
