Cancun: Confrontation between drug traffickers leaves two dead and one injured
Men aboard jet skis and weapons in hands caused terror on Cancun's Tortuga beach
The busy Tortugas beach in Cancun, Mexico, was the scene of a shootout between drug trafficking groups, which left two people dead and one tourist injured. The event was registered at 2:00 p.m.
According to eyewitness reports, the action resembled a scene from a movie, as a group of armed men (apparently 15 people) arrived ashore on jet skis and weapons in their hands.
Mexican authorities such as the Center for Coordination, Control, Command, Computing and Communication of Quintana Roo in Cancun, and the same Prosecutor's Office confirmed that they were criminals belonging to enemy gangs.
Apparently the two deceased persons were members of these irregular organizations.
According to what was reported by local media, so far none of the members of the gangs have been captured or identified, however, officials of the Quintana de Roo Police, the National Guard and the Mexican Navy have moved to the place to make the relevant investigations.
It's not the first time
This Thursday there was also a shooting between gangs of narcomenudistas (drug sellers) on the beach of an exclusive hotel in Puerto Morelos, very close to Cancun.
In this event, two alleged drug dealers lost their lives, according to police reports, and no affected tourists were registered.
On March 29 of this year, according to the Excelsior newspaper, there was also a shooting at kilometer 6.5 of the Kukulcán boulevard on Tortugas beach.
According to witnesses, three men with weapons in their hands got out of a vehicle identified with the symbols of the Andrés Quintana Roo Taxi Drivers Union, went to the restaurant of the place and shot at point-blank range a man and a woman who were in the place. This fact was recorded 15:30 hours.
A report from the DW media, 20 of the most touristy beaches in Mexico have become an oasis of drug trafficking, and therefore the areas of confrontation of these.
Specifically in Cancun, in the last 4 years the murders have multiplied by 15, making the city one of the most violent in the world.
Currently, the drug cartels are waging a battle to gain control of the territory and the sale of illicit substances.
The groups with the greatest strength in Cancun and the rest of the Riviera Maya are those from Sinaloa, Zetas, del Golfo and Jalisco Nueva Generación (CJNG), who fight to maintain control with the so-called drug dealing.
Given this, there is no security plan in tourist areas, promoted by the government of Andrés Manuel López Obrador to stop violence and drug trafficking.
According to Mexican journalists, the only government action has been the deployment of the National Guard, but without a specific plan.
