Conviction of carrier Rogel Aguilera has been reduced to 10 years

This Thursday, the sentence of the Cuban transporter Rogel Aguilera Mederos of 110 to 10 years in prison for the death of four people in an accident in 2019, was lowered by Governor Polis, US media detailed.

Polis wrote in the letter that registers the relief measure for the Cuban, that he deserves forgiveness for a considerable time. He insisted that Rogel Aguilera was sentenced to 110 years in prison, which is an excess of imprisonment for life, for a disastrous but sincerely unexpected demonstration.

He also added that despite not being exempt from responsibility, his sentence is disproportionate compared to that of numerous and different detainees in the country's justice system.

"The scope of the 110-year sentence is not comparable with his activities, nor with the discipline applied to others for comparative cases," the governor concluded.

Upon learning of said sentence, the neighborhood marches, public petitions, the efforts of state officials and the activities of the courts have joined the various efforts to lower the sentence.

The prosecutor for the Colorado Judicial District First Attorney, Alexis King, registered the criminal charges against Aguilera, filed an appeal to the designated sentencing authority asking for the sentence to be reevaluated, fourteen days ago.

King accepted that he deserves mercy for quite some time, as he was sentenced to 110 years in jail. This is actually more than a life sentence, for a sad but accidental demonstration.

In October, Aguilera was found guilty. December 13, was the day he received his 110-year prison sentence for causing a road accident on April 25, 2019, causing the death of four individuals and dozens of injuries, west of Denver.

A hand of solidarity

Since then and in some events, dissatisfied citizens and great famous personalities, asked Governor Jared Polis to change or annul the young man's sentence.

In addition, agents from the League of United Latin American Citizens (Lulac), decided to hold a meeting to ask him to intercede for the carrier.

After this meeting, Lulac thanked the governor for his kindness in meeting with the group to discuss the case of Rogel Aguilera Mederos. The organization's president, Domingo García, reported in a statement that they had a broad and open conversation.

"Our message to the governor is clear: This is a case of a tragedy that has turned into a horrendous injustice on the part of Colorado's criminal justice system," Garcia added.

The trucker's mother, Oslaida Mederos, accused her son's trial as fraud on Wednesday, December 29, 2021.

In a meeting with the columnist Mario J. Penton, Mederos confirms that there was evidence for the situation they kept, which the legal advisor never wanted to present or never got. For example, that your son did not collide with a vehicle, but with a truck, since his brakes went off.

The prisoner's mother says that her arrival in the United States was due to a request for family reunification from her sister, a long-time resident in the United States, and that her son had never had any problems with the police. They come from Batabanó, Mayabeque, and arrived in the United States in 2015.

Aguilera worked, her mother describes, fixing roofs and in a pipe factory, before obtaining a carrier permit. She says her son did not buy a driver's license, responding to certain comments made against her son, who says he is also stressed by his seven-year-old son, Michael, who is in Cuba.

Artists in support of the sentenced

The famous Colombian vocalist Shakira, learned of the 110-year prison sentence imposed on Cuban transporter Rogel Aguilera Mederos, 26, for a car accident that left four dead and several injured.

"The technicalities in this sentence should not prevail over judicial discretion or amount to injustice and a life prison sentence for an incident that, although tragic for all involved, has been a mere accident," said Shakira, through his Instagram stories, where 71 million followers were able to hear his opinion.

He organized a signature on request on Change.org, in which he requested at least four million signatures, to request the revocation of the Cuban's conviction.

Like Shakira, socialite Kim Kardashian, who recently passed the California School of Law exam and has handled some uncertain cases, did the same and guaranteed that she planned to make a worthwhile effort to take care of Aguilera Mederos.

In his statement in support of Aguilera, he assures that he was not drunk or drugged, the brakes of the truck he was driving simply failed him.

He also commented on his Instagram stories that the judge did not want to sentence him to such an extreme codena, but that he had to abide by Colorado rules, feeling his hands tied at the time.
