Earthquake in Peru of 7.2 on the Richter scale
This Thursday, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) announced an earthquake of magnitude 7.2 south of Peru, on the border with Bolivia.
Hernando Tavera, director of the Geophysical Institute of Peru explained to RPP radio that:
“So far, due to the level of intensity on the shaking surface, it should not generate any type of damage, more so if it scares (in the population). When the earthquake is deeper, the shaking of the ground is less. Perception radius is greater than shake radius. The entire southern region of Peru has been affected by the earthquake.
For its part, on its Twitter account, the National Seismological Center of Peru reported that the earthquake was 20 kilometers from Ayaviri, 240 km deep and with a magnitude of 6.9. Similarly, it was reported that it was felt in the Tacna region, on the border with Chile ; that is, Moquegua, Cusco and Arequipa.
However, the USGS reported that the epicenter was 13.1 kilometers east-southeast of Azángaro, in the Puno region, and 30.3 kilometers west of Ayaviri, with a depth of 217.8 km.
In the same way, also on its Twitter account, the National Emergency Operations Center of Peru (COEN) announced that the population perceived the earthquake as between moderate and strong, and that at the moment no material or personal damage had been reported.
Although later, in a statement, the COEN stated that the earthquake was felt in Ayaviri, Asillo and Azángaro and felt moderate in the districts of Orurillo, Pucará, Tirapata and San José, province of Melgar. He also added that:
“In the event of an earthquake, stay calm and avoid panic. Likewise, it is necessary to prepare a family evacuation plan and verify the exit routes; In the same way, you must locate the internal and external security zones and have your emergency backpack at hand.”
In the same way, the Geophysical Institute of Peru highlighted that in the cities of Puno and Juliaca the tremor was moderately perceived, although mostly in Ayaviri. It also caused alarm in the towns of Arequipa, Cusco, Tacna, Moquegua and Apurímac.
It should be noted that Peru is geographically located in a place called the Pacific Ring of Fire, notable for its extensive seismic activity and extending along the west coast of the continent. For this reason, the South American country reports at least 400 earthquakes per year.
