The United States justice sentenced Emma Coronel, the wife of former Mexican Joaquín Guzmán, better known as “El Chapo,” the leader of the powerful Sinaloa Cartel, to three years in prison.

The sentence was made known by the resolution issued by the Washington DC court, issued by Judge Rudolph Contreras, who imposed a sentence less than 4 years requested by the prosecution.

This reduction in the sentence, according to the judge, is due to the fact that Coronel was a teenager when she married Guzmán.

In this process, a 32-year-old Colonel had pleaded guilty in June. Among the charges alleged against him is the conspiracy to traffic drugs, launder money, and participate in deals with the Sinaloa Cartel.

In the sentence, the judge ordered that Emma Coronel serve 4 more years of supervised release, and the payment of a fine of 1.5 million dollars. He also pointed out that the 9 months she had been held will be deducted from her sentence.

Emma Coronel's request

During the sentencing, Coronel asked the judge that the nine-year-old twins he had with "El Chapo" not grow up without their mother, after the life sentence that the former is serving.

"Today the suffering that I have caused to my family hurts me a lot," She also added that she was sorry for everything she had caused.

To which the judge replied: "I hope you raise your twins in a different environment than they have experienced to date. Good luck"
